Phonics Fundamentals: What Teachers and Leaders Need to Know About Effective Practices

  • 04/23/20
  • 12:00 PM CST
  • FREE
Presented by: Dr. Lori Helman, Professor and Director, Minnesota Center for Reading Research, University of Minnesota.

In this webinar, literacy professor and research center director Dr. Lori Helman will help you navigate the flood of information around this important instructional topic and work to disentangle the rhetoric from the research. The session will outline what systematic, explicit phonics is and how we know it when we see it within core instruction. Building on descriptions of successful practices in the early grades, she will also highlight the kinds of phonics instruction that should take place in the upper elementary grades and what to do if students have missed out on early systematic instruction. Along the way Dr. Helman will discuss frequently asked questions such as: How are phonics and phonemic awareness the same or different? How much time should phonics instruction take in various grade levels? and How can educators not lose sight of fostering a love of literature even as students read simple, controlled texts?
